Skinyourscreen.com under attack

It's become apparent to me that there is an individual, or individuals, who are determined to keep Skinyourscreen.com offline. Sunday afternoon I discovered that the site was once again comprimised, this time large portions of files were erased, rather than simple removal of the site template. After repairing the data and upgrading the site to e107 v0.72, I felt relatively confident that security would be enhanced.

Tuesday morning the site was closed by the web-host because of a massive dedicated denial of service attack. I am in talks with MidPhase and they are tracking the perpetrators. Needless to say, the incursions did leave tracks previous to the attack that are being tracked in the logs and forwarded to law enforcement agencies.

I can't say I understand why anyone would get so much pleasure out of repeatedly demonstrating that they can take down a hobbyist skinning site. Obviously it is something that is important to the perpetrators, otherwise they would have stopped after the first or second incursions and gotten their laughs. The only clue I have to their intentions is the original hacked banner by Error slopped onto the front-page stating that the "Danes and Swiss will kneel before our prophet," a reference to the recent cartoon in Denmark depicting the islamic prophet Muhammed wearing a bomb in his turban.

Unfortunately, what ErrorHack and his group, MaxPowerHack fail to realize is that they are themselves spitting on their beloved prophet (p.b.u.h.) by their actions. From my readings of the Noble Qu'ran, all members of the islamic faith are to set good examples that they might convert others to the faith. I read of peace being spread to all the children of God. What ErrorHack and his juvenile friends are spreading is malicious, unwarranted, and unprovoked hatred, a response that is anything but godly. Rather than uniting people with their cause, they are simply building more enemies, against themselves, against their cause, against Islam itself.

ErrorHack, there are more effective ways to make a point. Digital Terrorism just decreases understanding. You're a disgrace to the peaceful faith from which you profess to fight.

  • Thank you Mr Richard, Islam is far from that.

  • Two of my great friends in the student housing here are devout members of the Islamic faith. Their friendships are cherished. I have fasted for Ramadan with them, and enjoyed the feasts and friendships that have followed. I have brought my family to Islamic Awareness meetings at school so my children can learn and understand various cultures and viewpoints.

It is important that readers understand that it is not Islam that is the enemy, nor their honored prophet, Muhammed. The enemy are people of any faith that murder, extort, or resort to any illicit, illegal, immoral, or questionable activity in the name of their religion, whether they be crusaders, suicide bombers or hackers.

Sarah, any word on our dear friend Nerio? We hope he (and you as well) are well despite these trying circumstances.

There has been an outpouring of sentiment for Nerio at AstonShell.com as well in this thread: http://www.astonshell.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3822

  • I totally agree on your Islam comments. It's Blasphemy to draw a cartoon picture, but ok to kill in protest of it? These reactions do not help their perception of being religious fanatics.

  • Look at those muslim who are fighting with themselve. What can we learn from them. Their religion originated from the word Peace but has reached the opposite pole, the violence. Doesn't it say something? Does it mean the destruction is pretty close and eminent. They are turning ruthless. What is a big deal about the cartoon. People swear all the time on the name of other gods. No one has been killed on that issue. May god save the peace and the peace prevalent in the name of Islam.

  • The key point I'd like to make is that zealotry of any kind often yields unsatisfactory or even disastrous results.

In the early 1090's, AD, early christians on pilgramiges to Jerusalem were attacked by Turkish muslims. This provoked a christian militaristic rampage to the Holy Land to wipe out what they called "infidels," people who did not espouse their value system. This response has historically been referred to as "The Crusades" and resulted in the uncountable suffering on both sides. Interesting that in the modern era, the word "infidel" is more commonly associated as being an islamic statement. These crusades made such a deep impact on the minds of Islam that I often hear of my islamic friends refer to the crusades as evidence that no suicide bomber ever carried out the damage the crusades accomplished, make of that what you will
Hitler is a prime example of zealotry taken to unfathomable extreme, in which over 6 million people of Jewish faith and background were massacred, abused and subjected to a most cruel and undeserved fate. Most of us would view the crusades as mistakes of the past, but it is not forgotten in the islamic world, lending new timeless meaning to the word "grudge."

History is rife with examples of zealotry having massive effects. Hitler and the Jewish Holocaust, Serbia/Croatia, East Timore, Sudan, and Stalin... all examples of genocide or "ethnic cleansing" under oppressive leaderships.

It is imperative that we learn to look past our differences and see each other for what we really are, fellow humans, brothers and sisters. No matter what our faith, creed or ethnicity we have a responsibility to guarantee each others survival and well being, a responsibility often short-circuited by short-sightedness, ignorance, and pride.

  • Unfortunately it has been my experience that organised religions amount to little more than playground gangs. Only a fool would allow a few individuals to dictate to him/her what God wants from them as an individual.

You can only find your God in your own heart, mind and actions.
